Spelling

At Bewdley Primary School, we believe that confident spelling is an important foundation for successful writing. Our aim is for children to develop the knowledge, understanding and strategies needed to spell accurately and increasingly independently.

We teach spelling systematically, helping children understand how words are constructed, recognise patterns and apply their knowledge when writing for different purposes.

Early Spelling and Phonics

In Reception and Key Stage 1, children develop their early spelling skills through our Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme.

Children learn to hear, identify and represent the sounds in words, using their developing knowledge of grapheme–phoneme correspondences to spell. They are also taught to read and spell common exception words.

This secure phonics foundation supports children as they develop their spelling knowledge and confidence.

Spelling Shed

From Year 1 onwards, we use Spelling Shed to provide a structured and progressive approach to spelling.

Spelling Shed complements our phonics teaching and supports children in developing their understanding of spelling patterns, rules and conventions.

As children progress through school, they explore increasingly complex spelling knowledge, including prefixes, suffixes, root words and the relationships between spelling and meaning.

Teaching includes explicit instruction, opportunities to investigate words, regular practice and the application of spelling knowledge in writing.

Applying Spelling in Writing

We recognise that spelling is most valuable when children can apply it independently.

Teachers encourage children to draw upon their phonics knowledge, spelling patterns and understanding of words when writing across the curriculum.

Children are supported to develop strategies for checking, correcting and improving their own spelling, helping them become increasingly confident and independent writers.

Using Spelling Shed at Home

Children from Year 1 onwards use Spelling Shed to practise and consolidate the spelling knowledge taught in school.

Each child has their own login, allowing them to access spelling games and activities, including assignments set by their teacher.

Spelling Shed offers different levels of difficulty, helping children develop their confidence and practise at an appropriate level.

Parents and carers can support their children by encouraging short, regular practice and talking about spelling patterns, sounds and word meanings.
