Writing
At Bewdley Primary School, we believe that every child should develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to become a fluent, purposeful and increasingly independent writer.
Our writing curriculum is carefully designed to build strong foundations in spoken language, spelling, handwriting, vocabulary and sentence construction. As children progress through school, they learn to organise their ideas, communicate effectively and make thoughtful choices about their writing for different audiences and purposes.
Through high-quality stories, poetry, non-fiction and meaningful writing opportunities, children develop their creativity and understanding of how language works. Teachers provide explicit instruction, modelling and opportunities for practice, helping children become increasingly confident and independent.
Writing is an important part of learning across the whole curriculum. Children are encouraged to apply their knowledge and skills when explaining ideas, sharing information and communicating their understanding in different subjects.
Writing Progression: Nursery to Year 6
Our writing curriculum is carefully sequenced to build children's knowledge, skills and confidence as they progress through school. Our year-group progression documents explain what children learn from Nursery to Year 6, including spelling, handwriting, composition, grammar and punctuation. They also outline the knowledge and skills children are working towards by the end of each year or stage.
These expectations support progressive learning while recognising that children develop at different rates and may require additional teaching or support.
You can explore our Writing Curriculum Intent and Introduction, alongside the individual year-group progression documents, in the downloadable documents at the bottom of this page.
